I’ve been thinking a lot about consistency lately. Both my relationship with it and how I see other business owners approach it. As you may know, our lives changed dramatically when we said goodbye to our beloved Max
The loss of a pet who is considered a family member can result in a fracture in lots of routines and rhythms, and we’ve certainly noticed that within ourselves. Where possible, we’ve picked supportive routines back up, to give ourselves some gentle structure to grieve within in our personal lives. I’m writing down things I wouldn’t usually need to write down to support my brain, and I’m doing lots of movement with my body.
As for my business, I don’t feel like I have much capacity to work on fresh content, but the structure of these newsletters (that I’ve been consistently sending for years now) has given me something to lean into that feels familiar. As my spiritual mentor taught me, my service is my medicine. This means that the monthly theme I have selected for my online circle for March is Consistency & Content. If I need it, maybe you do too. As I contemplate consistency through the lens of content creation and distribution, a little piece of writing bubbled up inside of me, and I wrote a poem about consistency in business! Is that weird?
A poem about Consistency & Content
(content as in social media content, NOT content as in relaxed, comfortable)
Here’s a poem I wrote about consistency for small business owners with big hearts (who worry about their email/social media/blog/newsletter consistency):
Consistency is a compass It’s certainly not a cage And yet it gets a bad rap In this digital day and age
We sometimes find ourselves believing That consistency equals absolute That you can’t EVER miss a beat And this is something I’d like to refute
We think it means daily socials And weekly emails, too We think it equals regular blogs All sorted, ready, and in the queue
But it doesn’t always happen that way And not everyone follows the same flow What works for you might not for me We’re all different, as you know
And not to mention the differences Between your business model and mine As we do our own things, I’m sure we agree That to be different is completely fine
So let’s change our minds about consistency And see it in a different way If the kindest version of yourself were here What would they say?
Consistency doesn’t mean you must show up And be visible EVERY SINGLE DAY It invites us to find ways to show up To share what it is that we have to say
Perhaps we can approach it as a vibe Instead of an ugly, rigid rule And perhaps it might begin to feel lighter Instead of a regular (exhausting) duel
Your audience isn’t counting The content that they see from you They don’t tally things up with a clipboard The only one who knows is you
But if you disappear from their inbox And become absent from their feeds You could be missing opportunities To water those (potential client) seeds
Forgive yourself if you miss a beat Generate compassion that you can feel You’re going to miss things now and then Because you’re human and real
But don’t swing too far the other way And abandon rhythm completely Find a flow to create consistency That works for you oh-so-sweetly
The problem was never consistency It’s what we assumed that it meant 9 out of 10 really ain’t bad When counting emails you wanted sent
So let’s agree to reclaim it As a desirable thing to pursue We’ll do our best (and also rest) And we’ll work on seeing things through.
